ProServe II and Windows Vista
Currently ProServe II runs under Visual FoxPro 8 runtime engine, that engine was designed for Window 2000. It runs on a Win98, Win 2000 or Win XP platform. Visual FoxPro 9 has been out for awhile and is designed for Windows XP, Microsoft plans to release SP2 for version 9 this summer, providing fixes and additional support for Windows Vista. I will be upgrading to that version as soon as the SP2 is released. When that happens I will be releasing a new ProServe II version upgrade making it 100% Vista compatible. In the mean time I've installed ProServe II as is on a Vista machine and so far I've had no problems. I also have a few customers running on Vista who has not reported any problems. So install on a Vista at your own risk until I release the Vista compatible upgrade sometime this winter. I do know the new optional WorkPDA Interface would not run on Vista because of ODBC drivers. At this point I'm not sure about pricing for that upgrade. But it won't be much, I remember the last upgrade was only $45.00, most likely this upgrade will be the same price. So if you can; wait until this upgrade is released before upgrading to/or purchasing Vista. If you need to install on Vista before then; you will need a new Installation CD, give us a call.

Antivirus and Security Software - What's right for you?
As time goes on the need for better antivirus and firewall security software is required if you use or plan to use the internet. Not long ago users had a choice of either connecting their office computers to the internet or not. But now days the new operating systems and software installed require access to the internet to function properly. Let me give you an example of one of my clients in which I provide for their office network and business software. For years we actually ran two totally separate networks. One 10 user peer-to-peer network for the custom business software and the other smaller peer-to-peer network for internet access. We ran an inexpensive antivirus software product and would simply re-install any operating system if one was infected with a virus. Never having to worry about the business network getting infected. The problem with that is we have a online catalog order system and needed to interface the website orders with the business software databases.

So we installed a new Small Business Server 2003, Exchange Mail Server and the ISA 2004 firewall and did away with the 2nd network. I installed a antivirus product called Panda Business Secure from Panda Software. At the time I trusted it and had used it before. Now usually I don't cut down or spread rumors about other software companies, but I'm compelled to in this case. The Panda product proved to be a nightmare, it cause server errors, system lockups, email problems at random. The errors posted in the event logs seem to all point to Server Group Policy Objects, Exchange Server issues etc.. anything except Panda. As a last ditch effort to solve the problems; I un-installed this product and all errors and problems went away. I ended up installing another antivirus product from Trend Micro without any problems at all.

What's right for you?
I'm not sure which antivirus and security software product is right for you, but I can tell you that Panda Software antivirus products is NOT right for me. There are many antivirus products out there, some good, some okay, some are great and some that do what they say it will do, and others that will not. But one thing they all do or at least offer; is a 30 day trial version. So test drive it before purchasing and make sure they offer good support. A good website knowledge base is a plus. Most offer multiple year licensing discounts in which you can save, but you should only purchase multiple years if it's a trusted and proven product. Otherwise you may purchase years that you may not use. Like in my case above, a Three Year licensing deal that we only used for three months. (NO REFUND, Panda hid behind a 30 day policy) One last thought; just because it comes pre-installed on your new computer does not mean it's the best or that it cannot be un-installed.

That's it for now, be sure to update your newsletter subscription profile and thanks for using EasyBee Software...
